The Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) has started training Nigerian youths on how to tap into its Train 7 project.

Speaking in Port Harcourt, Rivers State during the kick-off ceremony of NLNG Train 7 Project Human Capital Development (HCD) Training Programme, Dr Sophia Horsfall, the General Manager, External Relations and Sustainable Development of NLNG remarked that the training would enable the youths involved to enhance the skills they would obtain in various disciplines to work within and outside the Train 7 project, if need be.

Horsfall said that the 140 trainees being currently inaugurated are to undergo a robust advanced-on-job training (OJT) programmes.

The NLNG Boss also recalled that prior to this current batch, a Batch A of the NLNG Train 7 HCD Basic Training Programme commenced in November 2024 with 331 trainees.

This batch, she explained was trained in capacity development in facility management, engineering, ICT, HSE, quality assurance quality control, welding and fabrication.

For the Batch B of the training programme, which kicked off on May 27, 2025, she said had 70 trainees who are undergoing capacity development in data analysis and supply chain management, pointing out that “these are critical skills required in the industry and a testament to many impressive benefits of the NLNG Train 7 Project which is currently at about 80 percent completion.”

While advising the trainees to take the training programme seriously, she further recalled the dogged steadfastness and engagements it took NLNG to get to the point it is now adding that the programme represents more than just another milestone which reaffirms NLNG’s unwavering commitment to HCD mandate of the federal government through the Nigerian Content Development Monitoring Board (NCDMB) aimed at building “a strong, skilled and competitive Nigerian workforce for the oil and gas industry.”

She further declared that the NLNG believes that the “foundation of true and lasting development lies in the empowerment of our people, particularly our youths.”

Also speaking at the occasion, Mrs Tarilate Teide-Biribena who represented NCDMB said that her organisation through the building of Training 7 Project has facilitated basic training for about 400 Nigerians in diverse technical, vocational and specialized areas as well as equipping them with practical skills directly aligned with industry needs.

Teide-Biribena who noted that “training alone is not enough” also explained that this is the reason the NCDMB has committed resources toward institutional strengthening, particularly through their on-going collaboration with the University of Port Harcourt, which is serving as a hub for academic and industry linkages.“

She also said that the formal launching of on-the-job component of NLNG Train 7 HCD programme would help some bright and promising Nigerians gain practical exposure and real-time experience across various technical domains within the NLNG operational plants in Bonny Island.

Continuing, the NCDMB Boss said that the training initiative “underscores our belief that theory must meet practice and that skills must be honed in environments that reflect the realities of the modern energy sector.”

While commending all the stakeholders involved in making the training programme feasible, she advised the trainees not to fritter away the golden opportunity given to them saying “before you is both a privilege and a responsibility. You are not just participants in a programme-you are ambassadors of the Board and by extension, of Nigeria’s national content agenda.”

It should be recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari on June 15, inaugurated the Train 7 of the NLNG virtually adding that the success story of the NLNG has proved that Nigeria has great capacity to deliver value to the world by harnessing our natural resources.
